About the Artist
Art has always played a very central role in my life. From an early age, I was quite sure that what I hoped to be was a painter, particularly of portraits. It sounds such a cliche to say ‘its my dream’, but to be honest it is. Painting is fundamentally one of the things that enables me to feel most like myself, it helps me think and express the way I see and often feel.
I have found light to be an avenue for expression in the majority of my work. The moods that can be created through various lighting I have found can encapsulate the subject matters state of mind and emotion. In each piece I focus on trying to communicate and importantly celebrate something of the essence of the person I am painting. It is a real honour to be permitted to paint and I am aware from having my portrait painted that you are placing a great deal of trust in the painter. My aim is to try to acknowledge the more subtle, intimate qualities of a sitter as I find these to be the most authentic, beautiful parts. Strength in weakness is the theme that continually engages me. I find the vital elements of hope and humanity at work in this tension deeply inspiring.
